Three-Dimensional Representations: Chair Conformations

Chair Conformations are the most accurate representations of how cyclohexane rings are actually oriented in space. They appropriately reflect the angles between the carbons in the ring and the positions of the groups on each carbon in the ring. However, chairs are commonly harder to draw and interpret for students of organic chemistry.

Chairs show the cyclohexane ring in its true, non-planar, orientation. Chairs can be drawn on paper by drawing three sets of parallel lines. This drawing process is animated below.
